If nothing further is done to halt the Pearl River Navigation Project of the Army Corps of Engineers, the Honey Island Swamp and West Pearl River will be lost forever.

• The turbidity in the river caused by dredging and barging will suspend mercury (and other harmful elements now in the sediment) in the water to be ingested by fish....this will make them unfit for human consumption and will devastate their ability to spawn.

• The diversion of water from the West Pearl to the East Pearl (a "secret" part of this project) will lower the water level of the West Pearl up to two feet during low water and dry up a large portion of the swamp for approximately six months out of the year.

• The huge wakes of the barges (21,000 over the next five years) will cause bank washing, soil and tree washing (erosion), as well as present a definite danger to the safety of people in small boats. Also, consider the potential for deaths if and when these (21,000 proposed) barges knock into the pilings of bridges for I-10 and Highway 90!

• Become involved. Call and write your congressmen and senators expressing your opposition to this project. (We, the taxpayers, are paying for it!) Call your local elected officials (mayors, councilmen, judges, and jurors) to get them more involved in halting this project.

• Stay informed. By joining the Pearl River Basin Legal Defense Fund, you will receive the newsletter letting you know of the latest developments in our court battle (it's a lot more interesting than O.J.!). Any donation places your name on our mailing list.

REMEMBER, this is not a maintenance project...it is a construction project that will turn our beautiful river into a navigation canal for barges unless you do your best to stop it for good.
